Iceland is indeed a windy country, but contrary to what one might expect, the history of wind energy utilization here is not very long. This is mainly because, until now, access to other sustainable energy resources like hydropower and geothermal energy has been abundant.
However, the synergy between wind and hydropower has long been under consideration. As wind energy becomes more competitive with other energy sources, interest in wind energy in Iceland has rapidly increased. Wind energy could play a significant role in helping Iceland achieve its goals for energy transition and carbon neutrality, thereby fulfilling its international climate commitments.
In 2020, HS Orka submitted three proposals for wind energy projects to the framework plan for the protection and utilization of land areas. HS Orka has already begun research and is closely monitoring the progress of government efforts to develop regulatory proposals for wind energy utilization.
