Expansion of Svartsengi Power Plant

Construction on the construction of the seventh phase of the power plant in Svartsengi, SVA7, began in mid-2023, but preparations had been going on for a long time.

After construction, the power plant's production capacity will increase by a third, but the power plant's power capacity is now about 66 MW. In the project, older production units in power plants 3 and 4 will be decommissioned, but they produce a total of 14.4 MW. In their place, a new production unit will be installed in the enlarged power plant 6. The project will improve the utilization of the resource and increase the production capacity of the plant to 85 MW. A new cooling tower will also be built. Work on planning and licensing issues was completed in 2022 with the issuance of a new exploitation and activation license authorizing the production of 85 MW of electricity. With the introduction of phase 7 in Svartsengi, the possibility opens up to improve the company's hot water production with new equipment and heat supply in energy plant 2.

The period of major earthquakes in Reykjanes, which began in earnest on November 10, 2023, has called for the evacuation of the work site in Svartsengi, and therefore construction has not gone without a hitch. It is unclear whether the earthworks will affect the overall progress of the project, but the estimated completion date is late 2025.
