The symposium marked the culmination of commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of Hitaveita Suðurnesja, the predecessor of HS Orka.

Tómas Már Sigurðsson, CEO, opened the symposium, followed by six presentations from various perspectives of the operations within the company. In the presentations by Yngvi Guðmundsson, Chief Engineer at HS Orka, and Þorleifur Jóhannesson, Mechanical Engineer at Verkís, the past fifty years were reviewed, highlighting various technological innovations and solutions developed by the company during that time.

In the presentations by Lilja Magnúsdóttir, Head of Resource Management at HS Orka, and Vala Hlöðversdóttir, Associate Professor at the School of Engineering at the University of Reykjavík, the focus was more on the geosciences behind geothermal energy utilisation and the future opportunities in this field.

Jón Ásgeirsson, Director of Strategy and Improvement and the Resource Park, and Jón Kjartan Jónsson, Director of Aquaculture at Samherji, discussed the significant development that has already taken place in HS Orka's Resource Park and the exciting projects in the pipeline. Jón also touched on various aspects related to sustainability, corporate social responsibility, and ownership in the Icelandic energy sector.

After the presentations, Gestur Pétursson, Director of the Environment and Energy Agency, moderated an engaging panel discussion with participants Tómas Már Sigurðsson, Jóhann Páll Jóhannsson, Minister of Environment, Energy and Climate, Grímur Sæmundsen, Founder and CEO of Blue Lagoon, and Ingunn Agnes Kro, Chair of the Board of RARIK and former board member of HS Orka. The panelists were tasked with putting on their future glasses and looking fifty years ahead to see what the future holds for the Icelandic energy sector.

After the symposium, guests enjoyed anniversary refreshments, and it was clear that both the presentations and panel discussions were well received by those in attendance.

We thank everyone who attended at Sjáland on Friday and celebrated this occasion with us.
