HS Orka is a privately owned heat and power production company built on the solid foundation of Hitaveita Suðurnesja, a regional utility established in 1974. Since its inception, the company has been a leader in the production of renewable energy in Iceland and it is the country‘s third-largest electricity producer. The ownership is equally divided between Jarðvarmi, owned by 14 Icelandic pension funds, and leading infrastructure investment manager Ancala, headquartered in the UK. Ancala invests in and improves critical infrastructure businesses across a range of geographies and essential sectors including renewables, transport, utilities, and circular economy.

Svartsengi Power Plant

Svartsengi takes its name from an old resting place for horsemen, located east of the current Grindavíkur road, opposite the power plant. The power plant itself is situated on a lava field that flowed in 1226, known as Illahraun.

Reykjanes Power Plant

Electricity production at the Reykjanes Power Plant began in 2006 with the commissioning of two turbines that produced a total of about 100 MW. A third turbine was added in 2023, increasing the plant’s capacity by 30 MW. The Reykjanes Power Plant also supplies heat to nearby companies in the HS Orka Resource Park, with an industrial heating system of about 100 MW in operation at the plant.

Brú Power Plant

The power plant has had a positive impact on the community of Bláskógabygg, as it has improved the security of electricity supply in neighbouring areas.

Fjarðará Power Plant

HS Orka owns and operates two hydroelectric plants in Fjarðará, Seyðisfjörður, with a total installed capacity of 9.8 MW. The Fjarðará plants were commissioned in 2009 and consist of two plants: Bjólfsvirkjun and Gúlsvirkjun.

Our Power Plants

HS Orka owns and operates four power plants, two geothermal power plants in Reykjanes peninsula and two hydroelectric power plants – one in South of Iceland and one in the East. HS Orka plans to build more power plant projects around Iceland and these projects are in different stages of development.

Expansion of Svartsengi Power Plant

HS Orka began construction on the expansion and renovation of the power plant in Svartsengi in the middle of 2023. The project is called SVA7, but it consists of renewing older equipment, installing a new machine and increasing the production capacity of the power plant by a third.

Krýsuvík

Aspirations for utilizing the geothermal resource in Krýsuvík have a long history, and in 2024 the municipality of Hafnarfjörður and HS Orka signed an agreement on research and utilization of resource rights in Krýsuvík for the production of hot water, fresh water, and electricity. The goal is to increase the reliability of hot water supply in Hafnarfjörður and other parts of the capital area, as well as to meet the growing demand for electricity in the country.

Hvalá Power Plant and other VesturVerk projects

The main goals for the power plant to enhance the security of electricity delivery in the Westfjords, where electricity delivery is currently the least secure and interruptions are most frequent in Iceland. The Hvalá power plant is located in a geologically cold area, and in light of the earthquakes in the southwest corner of the country, it will also contribute to national electricity security.

Our history

HS Orka is Iceland's third largest and only privately owned energy company. The company, which has been producing renewable energy for half a century, owns and operates two geothermal plants, one in Svartsengi and the other in Reykjanes.
